An Animated Series Based on Jeff Smith’s ‘Bone’ Is Coming to Netflix

Netflix is going to adapt the highly-acclaimed 1990’s comic book series Bone into an animated series. The book was created by Jeff Smith back in 1991.

“I’ve waited a long time for this,” said Smith. “Netflix is the perfect home for Bone. Fans of the books know that the story develops chapter-by-chapter and book-by-book. An animated series is exactly the way to do this! The team at Netflix understands Bone and is committed to doing something special — this is good news for kids and cartoon lovers all over the world.”

Warner Bros. had the goal of establishing a new film franchise with the Bone property back in 2016, but nothing ever came out of those plans ultimately. Kung Fu Panda director Mark Osborne was originally on board to helm that defunct animated version.

In the comic book Bone we are introduced to three cousins: Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone. We follow the trio as they are run out of their hometown of Boneville and find themselves in very Lord of the Rings-style mysterious land, a magical valley full of dragons, lost princesses and bawdy taverns. The cousins are accidentally split up, and while trying to reconvene, they each bring their unique sensibilities to the people of the valley, who are waging a never-ending war with evil Rat Creatures.

Netflix has not yet announced a premiere date for Bone, but sometime in mid-2021 would probably be a safe bet.
